I've tried to download the file but am real sketchy on how to actually get the file. Here's the actual site: pnm://media.sme.co.jp/~SonyTechno/ae.ra I've tried FTP and Netscape but couldn't get the file. Can anyone help? Rusty PS: The file is only up on the site till Oct. 31.

in short, downloading *this* .ra file is not an option. .ram files with a pnm address like this one stream audio from a RealAudio server (vs. http server). The .ra file in question is in the user directory ~SonyTechno which, in this case, is not accessible via http or ftp. other server set-ups can be different and possibly allow for a workaround. But generally, this will meet this disapproval of artists and labels. mike wasisco On Sat, 25 Oct 1997, Rusty Householter wrote:

I've been searching for a workaround to this forever. As far as I know, it's impossible. Real Audio has built in security so you can't download the original ra file (if it's from a pnm site). The only way to get it is if they allow recording (via software) and you have real player plus. But I've never seen one site that allowed recording. Your best bet is to hook your computer to a tape deck and record it live and hope the connection stays fine. -Kevin

Just confirm, I tried recording the audio file using realaudioplus, and it's protected. Doh! Aaron

Real Audio is meant to be a teaser, not an end product. It sounds like crap, really. It gives you an idea of what something sounds like, but doesn't really replace the original. That's the whole reason record companies are willing to put it up on their sites! I've recorded real audio digital direct to DAT and it still sounds like shit.

well, I have, too... when it was a .ra HD file (on a friends computer... I wish I had access to now) direct to DAT... it was the PLAID live in Stockholm '95... and it sounds great! 59min. long, and it sounded like it was from a radio braodcast... just a tiny bit of static every 20 min. or so... nothing a little EQ couldn't mask. so I think it just depends on the quality that is put up, and the quality of the connection. that being said... thanks to all that have replied ready to help me... but I found someone that has the promo CD version. (Thanks;) np = Technoise: Colour-Sound
